Bhaktapur’s Biska Jatra – A Vibrant New Year Festival of Nepal
Biska Jatra is one of the most exciting and culturally rich festivals celebrated in Bhaktapur. Marking the Nepali New Year (Bikram Sambat), this grand event usually takes place in mid-April and lasts for Nine (9) days. Known for its dramatic rituals, chariot processions, and community participation, Biska Jatra offers a unique glimpse into the living traditions of the Newar community.

Major Attractions of Biska Jatra
- Chariot Procession (Rath Yatra):
Massive wooden chariots carrying the deities Bhadrakali and Bhairab are pulled through the narrow streets by enthusiastic locals. The tug-of-war between different parts of the city adds excitement and symbolizes friendly rivalry. - Yo: Sin (Lingo) Dyo Raising and Falling:
A tall ceremonial pole, known as the Yosin, is erected at Yo: Sin Khyo. Its dramatic erection and eventual toppling mark the beginning and end of the festival and the transition into the New Year. - Sindoor Jatra:
On the Second days New Year, devotees celebrate with vermilion powder (sindoor), music, and dancing, creating a vibrant and colorful atmosphere across the city Madhyapur Thimi, Bode, Lokanthali, Nagdesh .
